Houston, Texas – Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church broke ground recently creating a new vision for the Houston community on Sunday, December 14, 2014, for the construction for a new multimillion dollar state of the art facility to be constructed soon. Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church charter members, church, and community leaders all came together for a stellar groundbreaking ceremony. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church verbally expressed, “Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church has grown dramatically over the years and that it’s time to grow and expand to a new church facility. This is a place where God will be worshiped. Jesus, his son will be praised for what he has done, and the people of God will serve one another and this community.” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said, “Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church is America’s church and has been a beacon of hope for more than five decades.” Rev. William A. Lawson prayed a prayer of hope and focused on simply asking that God would lay his gracious hand on this new venture. Groundbreaking ceremony guest speakers included Texas State Representative Rodney Ellis, Texas State Representative Borris Miles, City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker, City of Houston Controller Ronald Green, City of Houston Council Member Dwight Boykins, and H.I.S.D. School Board Member Paula Harris. Also in attendance included Rev. William A. Lawson Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, KTRK - ABC 13 News Anchor Melanie Lawson who emceed the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Timothy Sloan Pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church, H.I.S.D.
