HOUSTON AREA URBAN LEAGUE CELEBRATES 49 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, the Houston Area Urban League held its 49th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala at the Hilton Americas Hotel in the Grand Ballroom raising more than $600,000. This organization continues to be a voice for the disadvantaged with new ideas and programs based on their strong leadership, foundation and mission. The programs and services provided by the Urban League to those in need are the areas of Education and Youth Development, Workforce and Economic Development, Workforce Training, Housing, and Health and Wellness initiatives.

The Masters of Ceremony were Khambrel Marshall (KPRC-TV2) and Melanie Lawson (KTRK-TV 13). The gala co-chairs were Yolanda Green Barnes (Haul Board Member) and Marina Coryat (Haul Board Member). The honorable chairs were Dr. Carolyn Farb (Philanthropist and Author) and Dr. Rod Paige (Former U.S. Secretary of Education).

The 2017 Honorees:

  • Gerald Hines Corporate Award – Troi and Kelly Taylor (Taylor Construction Management)

  • Marguerite Ross Barnett Leadership Award – Cheryl D. Creuzot

  • Marguerite Ross Barnett Leadership Award – Sallie Sargent

  • Heritage Award – The Houston Astros Foundation

  • Quentin Mease Community Service Award – Phillips 66 – Black Employee Network

  • Empowerment Award – Ray B. Shackelford

The Houston Area League was founded in 1968, and is a United Way Agency affiliated with the National Urban League. Its mission is to help African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights. It achieves this mission through the provision of the following programs and services: education and support services, workforce technology training, housing and social services, employment counseling and placement, economic development and health awareness.
